- W4387161281 abstract "The history of obstetrics is also a history of power. Childbirth shifted into the hospital where obstetricians continue to develop medical and technological models of perinatal care. In this chapter the authors address how anthropologists have examined obstetrics over the past half century, specifically obstetric perspectives on the birthing body and how technology, ritual, and authority are central to obstetrics. They begin by drawing on nineteenth-century medical writings to explain how the field of obstetrics emerged, including practitioners' concerns with female anatomy, development of surgical skills, and medical education. Authoritative knowledge emerged as one of the central perspectives for analyzing the dynamics in medical training and between doctors and patients. Though it can be applied to medicine as a whole, the concept of authoritative knowledge explicitly arose from Jordan's work on comparative ethno-obstetrics. Several anthropologists have focused on technology, especially the fetal ultrasound, as an integral part of obstetricians' ethos, training, and practice." @default.
