- W4387161569 abstract "In this chapter, the legend of Gyanganj or Shambhala was taken as the case representing the connection between place, spirituality, and wellness. Two questions were posited to understand the relation of place, spirituality and wellness. These questions were defined operationally for the present chapter, incorporating both Western and Eastern views: (1) what psychological mechanisms make a place spiritual, and (2) how is the subjective state of wellness generated in a spiritual place? Discussion of the first question yielded factors like a holy presence, universal kindness, personal attachment, and expanded ego-boundary. To address the second question, selected psychoanalytical and non-psychoanalytical theories were recapitulated to understand the relation between spirituality and wellness. Although both spirituality and wellness are intrapsychic states, the relation between a spiritual place that is an external object and inner wellness requires greater deliberation. Unfortunately, adequate literature on the psychological mechanisms relating a spiritual place with wellness is lacking. In the present discourse, two models were construed as significant precursors of wellness in a place deemed spiritual. One is the presence of benevolent Spiritual Masters, and the other is the ambience of attainment of the transcendental Self. The faculty of imagination, as an underlying psychological mechanism to connect place, spirituality, and wellness, is highlighted. Finally, future research directions are discussed." @default.
