- W4387161815 abstract "An increasing number of studies support a link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence. However, less is known about the mechanisms that underlie this association. Understanding a person's attitudes toward animals and how they relate interpersonally to humans may help further our understanding of this link. An opportunity sample of 170 participants completed the Attitudes toward the Treatment of Animals Scale, which assesses attitudes toward animal abuse, animal neglect, and the use of animals for resources. Participants also completed the Person's Relating to Others Questionnaire, which assesses maladaptive interpersonal relating within different domains of interpersonal space. A lack of concern about deliberate and targeted acts of animal abuse, animal neglect, and the use of animals for resources was significantly correlated with upper distant relating (which indicates a sadistic, intimidating, and tyrannizing interpersonal style) and upper neutral relating (which reflects a pompous, boastful, dominating, and insulting interpersonal style). It was also found that a lack of concern about deliberate and targeted acts of animal abuse was significantly correlated with upper close relating, which denotes a tendency to be intrusive, restrictive, and possessive of others. Findings have implications for theories that seek to understand the link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence." @default.
