- W4387203584 abstract "Fungi produce secondary metabolites such as amino acids, antibiotics, pigments, vitamins, and organic compounds that have a variety of biological properties such as antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antifungal, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. These compounds also have a wide range of biotechnological applications in the sectors of agriculture, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals. For many centuries, the kingdom fungi has provided several natural compounds used for folklore therapeutic purposes. For example, fungi such as Penicillium, Streptomyces, and Aspergillus synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites (low molecular weight) with potential bioactivity, which can cure various human ailments. The central metabolic pathways are involved in the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds, including pigments, antibiotics, amino acids, vitamins, and lipids. These metabolites have antifungal, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, anticancer, antipyretic, and antioxidant properties. The biosynthetic gene clusters in the genome are involved in synthesizing secondary metabolites and can be studied to manipulate or enhance secondary metabolite production through engineered pathways. The discovery of pharmaceutically essential compounds from the microbial metabolic pools is associated with promising fungal strains’ screening, selection, and biomolecular characterization. Taking all points together in a frame, the current chapter discusses the various fungal metabolites, their synthesis, and their importance in maintaining sustainable human health care with minimum adverse effects in pharmaceuticals as well as in agriculture." @default.
