- W4387223162 abstract "About This Issue Thomas Rzeznik, Co-editor Our lead article by Catherine O'Donnell (Arizona State University), A Dreadful Wolf in the Fold of Christ, takes readers back to the first decade of the nineteenth century to investigate a case of alleged clerical misconduct that emerged at St. Peter's Church in New York City in 1806. Through a careful reappraisal of the extant archival evidence, she reconstructs the series of allegations made and teases out the motives, concerns, and interests of various parties involved in a case that threatened the reputation of Catholicism at a time when Catholics were seeking their place in the new nation. We next offer a special forum to mark the fortieth anniversary of The Challenge of Peace: God's Promise and Our Response, the 1983 pastoral letter issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The product of extensive consultation and deliberation, the letter was immediately recognized as a landmark document for its articulation of Catholic teaching amid the U.S. arms race and Cold War nuclear proliferation. We are grateful to Lisa Sowle Cahill (Boston College), Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv. (Diocese of Lexington), and Donna Toliver Grimes (USCCB) for offering historical analysis and theological reflection on the document as it marks this milestone. Our third piece comes from Patrick Hayes (Redemptorist Archives), who turns to the scrapbooks assembled by early members of American Catholic Historical Society—this journal's sponsoring organization—to shed light on the founding decades of the Society and the social networks that animated late-nineteenth century Catholicism in Philadelphia. In calling attention to these mini-repositories, he argues for the utility of scrapbooks as a historical source. Following our regular book review section, the issue concludes with a cover essay by Catherine Osborne (independent scholar), who looks back at the travels to Rome that early twentieth-century Catholics were able to undertake from the comfort of their own homes through the use of the photographic slides viewed through the stereoscope, a device that rendered the images three-dimensional. She argues that the awe and intimacy provided by the stereoscope slides and other mass-produced cultural artifacts available to members of the Catholic laity helped foster a feeling of personal attachment to the pope and the papacy that contributed to the popular ultramontanism of the period.
