- W4387232251 abstract "Air Monitor for COVID-19 Researchers from the engineering and medical schools of Washington University in St. Louis have developed an air monitor capable of detecting the COVID-19 virus in a room within five minutes. The device is currently a proof of concept measuring 10 inches tall and one foot wide that the team plans to develop into a prototype for commercial or household use, according to a research article published in Nature Communications. (July 10,2023; https://bit.ly/44YqTcu.) Current methods for detecting viruses in the air can take up to 24 hours to analyze samples and require skilled labor; this device continuously monitors air with wet cyclone technology that samples 176 cubic feet of air in five minutes. When the virus is detected, a light on the device turns from green to red, indicating the need for increased air circulation. The device was tested in laboratory experiments and in the apartments of COVID-positive individuals. The researchers aim to develop a commercially available air quality monitor that can offer real-time information on the presence of live viruses in the air that could be used in enclosed spaces like hospitals and schools and could potentially be used to identify other respiratory viruses like influenza and respiratory syncytial virus. The system uses the company's i2i communication technology, which allows synchronized cardiac pacing between two leadless pacemakers based on the patient's clinical needs. Communication is achieved through high-frequency pulses transmitted through the body's conductive blood. The system is smaller than a AAA battery and made up of the AVEIR VR and AVEIR AR, which pace the right ventricle and right atrium, respectively. Unlike traditional pacemakers which require cardiac leads, leadless devices are implanted directly into the heart through a minimally invasive procedure. This minimally invasive device offers an alternative for the more than 80 percent of pacemaker recipients requiring pacing in two heart chambers. The company said in a press release that 97 percent of patients who have had the device successfully implanted have achieved atrio-ventricular synchrony. (Abbott. Stimulation System for Parkinson's Boston Scientific has obtained FDA approval for its Vercise Neural Navigator 5 Software with STIMVIEW XT Technology for deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. The software is used to program the stimulation systems and reduces deep brain stimulation therapy programming time by 56 percent by providing 3D images to guide precise placement, according to a company press release. (Boston Scientific. July 11, 2023; https://bit.ly/3q5DOuz.) The image-guided programming solution for these systems provides real-time visualization and stimulation of each patient's brain anatomy and provides patient data in a simplified format, allowing for more physician-patient interaction time and for physicians to adapt to patients' changing needs at different stages of their neurological condition.
