- W4387250479 abstract "Soybean (Glycine max L.) seed yield at the crop level is strongly associated with the number of pods and seeds. Assimilate production is considered the main factor controlling the number of pods and seeds, supporting the paradigm that soybean seed yield is source-limited. However, changes in the canopy leaf area not only affect assimilate production but also alter the balance of photomorphogenic light wavelengths, which in turn modulates plant morphology and development. We determined the effect of direct and indirect changes in canopy red/far-red ratio and blue light radiation during the pod set period on the main seed yield components in field-grown soybeans. Seven field experiments were conducted by applying light filters, light enrichment, and leaf area reduction treatments during the pod set period. Variables related to photosynthetic and photomorphogenic light, leaf area, biomass growth efficiency, biomass partition, and seed yield components were measured, and the relationship with yield and seed yield component was analyzed. The red/far red ratio and blue light radiation inside the canopy were enhanced during the pod set period by direct and indirect photomorphogenic light manipulation, which led to an increase in the number of nodes and pods on branches. Seed number and seed yield were significantly increased in field-grown soybean with reduced leaf area canopies. This response was not related to the crop growth rate or assimilate partitioning to pods during the pod set period. Our results provide experimental evidence that excess, not shortage, of leaf area during the pod set period limits soybean yield potential by reducing the number of pods and supports the hypothesis that soybean yield potential is sink-limited. Taking into account the effects of photomorphogenic radiation during the pod set period is relevant for the design of new crop breeding and management strategies, and for improving crop growth models." @default.
