- W4387341502 abstract "Coastal environments are saltier than inland ones. Exposure to salinity affects energetic expenditure because of metabolically costly osmoregulation mechanisms. As a consequence, the energy invested in osmoregulation cannot be invested in other functions such as growth. Lorrain- Soligon et al. (10.1111/1365-2435.14413) showed that, in Bufo spinosus—a very common toad in Western France—coastal individuals are smaller and lighter than their inland counterparts. During the breeding season, they captured reproductive (amplectant) pairs (as shown in the cover image, credit photo: Jean-Pierre Vacher), composed of a female (below) and a male (above), that were brought to the laboratory, in order to collect eggs clutches, and to compare the reproductive investment between coastal and inland individuals. Coastal females produced fewer eggs, and these eggs were smaller. The smaller body size of coastal females alone did not explain this lower investment in reproduction. Indeed, they found that these females invested disproportionately less in fecundity, egg size, and egg protection relative to their body size than their mainland counterparts. If coastal females appear to be more selfish, this could be due to an alteration of resource allocation to growth and reproduction in coastal amphibians, which may be linked to the significant spatial gradient of salinity and the energetic costs associated with osmoregulation. This study highlights the importance of investigating the impact that increasing salinization can have, at a time when marine submersions, increasing sea level and decreasing precipitations are more than even threatening coastal habitats." @default.
