- W4387368820 abstract "1 Filipino American Historical Society Journal Volume 10 - 2020 Growing the Garden: Virgilio R. Pilapil’s Legacy as Editor of the FANHS Journal by Terese Guinsatao Monberg and Patricia Espiritu Halagao The garden metaphor reflects how Gil saw his role as editor but the metaphor also reflects how he envisioned the FANHS Journal playing a role in growing the larger ecosystem of FANHS. In this section, we honor Gil’s editorial work. Gil served as editor of the FANHS Journal for twenty-five years editing seven volumes. He saw the journal as “one of the major means by which we would be able to continue to record, preserve and promote the knowledge of Filipino American history in the United States” (“Editorial” [1996] 5). Over that time, he curated a collection of articles representing the many contributions that realize the mission and vision of FANHS, showcasing community-based and university-affiliated historians, students, and FANHS chapter leaders, all sharing personal and community histories, methods for doing FANHS research, programming, or chapter work, as well as literary work and chapter updates. In honoring the legacy of Gil’s editorial work, we hesitated to choose specific articles as representative of his editorial work or as representative of FANHS because the impact of his work becomes more visible when you look at the bigger picture. Looking across volumes of the FANHS Journal, we see that Gil published researchers and authors who represent different geographies, immigration waves, and generations. To showcase Gil’s editorial work, then, we chose to reprint snapshots of the journal that represent his larger vision and the journal’s capacity to be generative for FANHS and for our communities. 1) Table of Contents from Issues of the FANHS Journal, Volumes 1-9, 1988-2015 When Gil assumed his editorship with the third volume, he looked to the first two volumes of the journal as models for how he might grow and nurture “the garden.” We reprint here, then, a complete record of articles published in the FANHS Journal, volumes 1-9. Over time, Gil shaped the FANHS Journal to mirror and highlight how FANHS members are documenting our stories and histories, generating dialogue, collaboration, and community in the process. 2) “FANHS Activities” Section from Volume 4 of the FANHS Journal (1996) In his editorial to volume 4 of the FANHS Journal, Gil wrote, “In this issue of the journal, we have gathered materials that relate to the activities of our historical society along with reports coming out of presentations from different sources. If it is on Filipino American history, we’re interested with it regardless of whether it is home grown or coming out of the academic hallways” (5). In this second volume published under his editorship, Gil includes a section, separate from the articles, titled, “FANHS Activities.” This section demonstrates how Gil saw the journal as an important space not only for representing Filipino American research but also for highlighting the range of FANHS: the work of chapters, the 68 Filipino American National Historical Society Journal Volume 10 - 2020 GROWING THE GARDEN: VIRGILIO R. PILAPIL’S LEGACY AS EDITOR OF THE FANHS JOURNAL By Terese Guinsatao Monberg and Patricia Espiritu Halagao Table of Contents from Issues of the FANHS Journal, Volumes 1–9, 1988–2015 “FANHS Activities” Section from Volume 4 of the FANHS Journal (1996) 69 Filipino American National Historical Society Journal Volume 10 - 2020 2 Filipino American Historical Society Journal Volume 10 - 2020 work of Trustees, the work of conferences, the work of national landmarks and proclamations, and the work of FANHS members. We chose to reprint the pages from the 1996 volume because it demonstrates both his vision as a fairly new editor and how his vision was shaped by his tenure as FANHS National President (1994-1998). Included here are pages from the 1996 volume that highlight the 1994 FANHS Conference, a FANHS proclamation on the 50th anniversary of Filipino Americans serving in World War II, and the dedication speech for the 1995 installation of FANHS’s Second National Historic Site Landmark at Morro Bay.1 FANHS chapter updates, FANHS Trustee updates, and news about FANHS members were also included in this section.
