- W4387368996 abstract "58 THE FIFTH FANHS NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO WAS A GRAND BASH* by Dorothy Laigo Cordova The Conference was a grand bash! Everyone was there or should have been. Honoring the Bridge Generation: Sons and Daughters of Filipino Pioneers was called the best conf erence we ever hacl' by many who have attended other FA.NHS conferences. On August 4-6, 1994, more than 400 attendees converged on the Clarion Hotel in Millbrae, California near the San Francisco International Airport. The Fifth FANHS National Conference was hosted by the San Francisco, East Bay, Santa Clara Valley and Vallejo Chapters. Conference chair was the immediate past President Emerita Teresa Jamero. For a year, the Program Committee chaired by Peter Jamero developed six tracks: Bridge Generation, Growing Up Brown, History, Research, Young Adults, and How To, including 42 workshops covering a wide spectrum of Filipino American history and experience. Filipino Japanese Americans: In the Aftermath of World War II was very emotional as panelists recalled the humiliations they experienced as teenagers. Some panels were very scholarly while others were interactive as people exchange ideas and personal histories with panelists. How To workshops taught budding historians how to interview, use photos, gather mini-journals, create archives, do family genealogy and start a chapter. Videos by and about Filipino Americans focused on history, tributes to artist Val Laigo and actor Jose DeVega (both deceased), and boxing. Then there were jazz musicians who continued to entertain past their workshop time and young comedians who entertained a standing-room-only crowd with unique Filipino American humor. *Dorothy Laigo Cordova is the Founder and Executive Director of FANHS. Filipino American National Historical Society Journal As usual, the Author's Reception - with free refreshments paid for by a grant from Anheuser Busch - drew a large enthusiastic crowd. The Saturday banquet honored 19 VIP Gold Awardees, 16 VIP Silver Awardees, and 19 Honorable Mentions - all of whom were part of the Bridge Generation - born before 1945. Some 400 to 450 people of all ages closed the best conference ever by eating, applauding remarks by dinner speaker - Fred Cordova, networking, then dancing the night away to the great music ofthe Big City Revue, San Francisco. 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION FOR FILIPINO AMERICAN VETERANS OF WORLD WAR II The 50th Anniversary of the Contributions of Filipino American Veterans During World War II was commemorated October 16, 1994 at a gathering held at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.. Led by Dr. Allan L. Bergano, president ofthe FANHS Hampton Roads Chapter, in collaboration with FANHS national president, Dr. Virgilio R. Pilapil, along with FANHS member Andrea Yangas of the Smithsonian Institution and FA.NHS trustee Rodney Obien of the Historic Preservation Society, the occasion was highlighted by the presentations of two prominent and knowledgeable Filipino Americans - Professors Alex S. Fabros, Jr. and Peter Bacho - who extolled the heroism of the Filipino Americans who fought as members of the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II in the Pacific especially the Philippines, as well as in Europe and the Mediterranean areas. A proclamation honoring the Filipino American World War II heroes was made by the FANHS national president at the onset of the occasion (see associated article on page 59).
