- W4387396871 abstract "Ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval (OR) is an essential component of in vitro fertilization. Although this procedure is safe and efficient, it is considered the most stressful and painful component of the process by patients. This procedure is typically performed under a combination of sedation and local anaesthesia. However, there is concern about the toxicity of analgesics and there is an increased desire from patients to move towards more natural alternatives. The management of pain, reduction of anxiety and the improvement of comfort via a non-pharmacological approach is therefore an important field of investigation. Sedation by virtual reality (VR) is a new and innovative method for relieving patients’ pain and anxiety before, during and after medical procedures. This revolutionizing digital therapy involves three-dimensional multisensory immersion combining clinical hypnotherapy and integrative therapeutics (HypnoVR*). The objective of this study was to investigate the anxiety reducing effect and the satisfaction of patients, using HypnoVR during OR. The use of an immersion headset with the HypnoVR* application was proposed to 40 patients undergoing OR. Written consent was obtained from willing participants. The headset was started before the placement of the venous line, the program lasting a maximum of 20 min. Low doses of Fentanyl and Versed were administered during the time of vaginal preparation, and sedation titrated according to the patients' comfort. A questionnaire evaluating pain, experience and satisfaction was completed before discharge. The results of the questionnaire after experiencing the HypnoVR session during OR were complied. 63% of patients considered themselves highly immersed in the experience (3-4 on a scale from 0-4). 95% of patient answered that the experience provided additional comfort during the procedure. 98% of patients were highly satisfied by their session (3-4 on a scale from 0-4). Interestingly, in patients that have had a previous OR procedure in the past, 93% concluded that this technology improved their level of comfort during the procedure. In these same patients, 93% also answered that this technology improved their experience of the procedure. In conclusion, VR is a pertinent complementary anaesthetic tool that obtains a good adhesion from patients. A high level of satisfaction was reported by a large majority of patients that underwent the procedure with the HypnoVR device. These results indicate that this device could be easily implemented in a clinical setting to increase patient comfort and satisfaction during an OR procedure. Our results are encouraging, and pain management using these devices must be confirmed by prospective multi-centre studies on larger cohorts." @default.
