- W4387403354 abstract "This chapter explores the life and work of Bourdieu to help establish why he is a theorist so often used in education, and higher education in particular. In a book about how those from marginalised groups face increased difficulty in entering academia compared to their privileged peers, Bourdieu’s non-privileged upbringing ensures there was always a personal interest in his own journey from student, to academic, to one of the most famous academics of the last century. It is that he was an academic that is also integral to his interest and understanding of how power, privilege, and marginalisation appear and fit together, or otherwise, in higher education. Dealing with students, dealing with faculty, dealing with university management are all aspects of his life that he dealt with on a regular basis, thus, for decades he saw how power and privilege could manifest itself in ways that determined success. Finally, this chapter’s historical overview and focus on his work and life explore how the development of Bourdieu’s theories and ideas occurred as his academic career developed, he moved institutions, and he became a globally renowned figure in the education zeitgeist." @default.
