- W4387448059 abstract "Background: School feeding programs (SFPs) aim to reduce hunger and improve children's nutrition and cognition. However, there is limited data on the perceived benefits and challenges of the SFPs in Addis Ababa. Thus, the present study was to explore teachers', students', and parents' perceptions towards and the challenges of the SFPs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: The study used a qualitative approach and a case study research design in Addis Ababa from April 10 to May 26, 2023. The study participants were recruited purposefully. Five focus group discussions and 20 in-depth and key informant interviews were conducted. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 primary school adolescents who received the school feeding program. Data were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, translated into English, and analyzed by an inductive thematic analysis approach using ATLAS-ti version 9.1.3.0 software. Results: The findings are presented as two major themes and under each there were four subthemes. 1) Perceived benefits of SFPs, four subthemes were identified. The first theme was increases students' enrolment and academic performance, including gaps in education and improving health outcomes. The second theme was it reduces the socioeconomic burden of the family, which focuses on lowering the socioeconomic burden on families. The third theme was student behavior change. This theme includes issues concerning student behavior improvement. Decreased social stigma and increased social integrity was the final theme. This theme focuses on the impact of eating together on students' social integrity and reduces social stigma. 2) Perceived barriers to SFPs gaps. subthemes were identified as poor market linkage between fostering mothers and producers, was the first theme. It includes gaps in SFPs commodities. The second theme, poor infrastructure, focuses on gaps in school infrastructure. Underpayment of workers was the third theme. This theme covers concerns with budget allocation that account for inflation, and summer payment of food handlers. Increased sense of dependency was the final theme. This theme is about students' and their families' dependence on the SFPs rather than focusing on education. Conclusions: Perceived benefits were improved educational outcomes, behavior, and social integrity and reduced socioeconomic burden, and social stigma. Challenges were a lack of market linkage, poor infrastructure, and an emergent sense of dependency. Establishing market linkage, improving school infrastructure, and awareness and further studies to quantify the perceived benefits and challenges of SFPs are recommended.
