- W4387448588 abstract "Colonial appropriations of colonised subjects’ lands translated into a deformed portrayal of both lands and colonised peoples. Postcolonial theory and practice have long countered these misperceptions, fighting notions such as the civilising mission (Boehmer, Colonial and Postcolonial Literature. Oxford University Press, 2005) or the atavistic nature of colonised subjects. Literary usages of settings have been the spearhead of such counter-colonial registers (Banerjee, Space, Utopia and Indian Decolonization: Literary Prefigurations of the Postcolony. Routledge, 2019). Subverting colonial misperceptions of landscape is also an issue which has permeated Irish Gothic, which reverses the misconception of the Catholic Irish as savage (Gibbons, Gaelic Gothic. Race, Colonization, and Irish Culture. Arlen House, 2004; Kahir, The Gothic, Postcolonialism and Otherness: Ghosts from Elsewhere. Palgrave Macmillan, 2009). In this sense, the short fictions of James Clarence Mangan anticipate later appropriations of the genre. J.C. Mangan abrogates colonial perceptions of space to show them as the result of colonial paranoia and of a biased interpretation of the colonial discourse of improvement. In view of the mentioned above, this chapter considers J.C. Mangan’s narrative techniques and the presentation of space in two his Irish stories, “An Adventure in the Shades” (1833) and “My Transformation. A Wonderful Tale” (1833), as decolonising tools, exposing the Anglo-Irish truncated relationship with their native land." @default.
