However, there is currently a lack of research comparing the environmental risks and benefits associated with the short-term fear industry. In this study, we examine the environmental hazards and benefits of the short-term fear industry by analyzing carbon emissions from global air aviation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings reveal both the net carbon emissions resulting from the short-term fear industry and its impact on carbon emissions reduction. Specifically, we estimate that approximately 12,772 airlifts required for COVID-19 inoculation efforts emitted around 13 million kilo tons (kt) of CO2. Moreover, global air aviation emissions were reduced by approximately 75% in the first year of the pandemic, decreasing from 905 million metric tons (Mt) to 226.15 Mt. Overall, the creation of a short-term fear industry resulted in a saving of approximately 678.749 Mt of emissions in 2020 after accounting for the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose that the CO2 emissions reduction achieved by the short-term fear industry, particularly in air travel during the pandemic, should be leveraged through post-COVID-19 technological advancements and policy tools. This approach can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing poverty elimination (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), climate action (SDG 3), and peace and justice (SDG 16)." @default.
