• W4387466650 abstract "The Kenya Rift lakes are globally important due to their unusual water chemistry, distinctive sediment mineralogy and diverse flora and fauna. Although the first human-induced changes date back millennia, the rate of environmental change has increased in recent decades. High lake levels have caused considerable damage through the last decade, yet historical and palaeoenvironmental records show these are not unusual given similar levels during the last 200 years. Unfortunately, forward projections of lake levels are also complicated by uncertainties concerning the impacts of global warming. At the same time, population growth is driving multiple anthropogenic impacts on the lakes such as deforestation with consequent increased catchment erosion rates and related increases in lacustrine sedimentation rates. Other human impacts include the effects of water abstraction and dam construction on water levels, as well as pollution and eutrophication. New roads will eventually lead to increased tourism and development. Geothermal power is increasing demand for water supplies. The flora and fauna in and adjacent to the lakes are highly dependent on the water conditions as shown by flamingo migration patterns in search of suitable conditions for their cyanobacterial food. Consequently, there is a need for environmental management to consider the different lakes as an integrated single system. Many of these impacts have noticeably increased during the 47 years the authors have worked in East Africa.
