- W4387470168 abstract "Objectives We aimed to understand how young adults develop knowledge regarding abortion and identify factors that create vulnerability to misinformation. Methods We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with young adults (aged 18–25) in the US between June and September 2022. Participants were recruited via social media ads. Interviews included questions about perceptions of abortion misinformation and participants were asked to evaluate the credibility of abortion clinic and crisis pregnancy center webpages that had contradictory information. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a grounded theory, constant comparative approach and multi-pass coding. Results 25 young adults were interviewed (56% female-biological, 56% from abortion-friendly states). Participants encountered false claims about abortion from a variety of sources, especially religious communities, family, and the internet. Myths about the impact of abortion on fertility and mental health were prevalent, though participants tended to ascribe mental health consequences to stigma. Many participants demonstrated significant knowledge gaps about abortion procedures and access, particularly regarding medication abortion. Most participants struggled to assess the reliability of contradictory sources of abortion information. Preexisting reproductive health knowledge, perceiving abortion as healthcare, and an awareness of anti-abortion rhetoric were identified as protective factors against misinformation. Limited abortion knowledge, perceiving abortion as dangerous, and viewing crisis pregnancy centers as reliable sources of medical information left participants vulnerable to misinformation. Conclusions While young adults are aware of abortion misinformation, their ability to discern myths from truths varies considerably. Interventions might be able to counter abortion misinformation by addressing common knowledge gaps, sharing abortion experiences, and raising awareness (pre-bunking) about tactics used to spread misinformation.
