- W4387470188 abstract "Objectives We aimed to explore the perspectives about intrauterine device (IUD) self-removal among family planning clinicians in the US. Methods This qualitative study includes semi-structured individual interviews with family planning clinicians throughout the US. We analyzed data using deductive and inductive techniques to perform content and thematic analyses. Results 30 family planning clinicians participated including 12 (40%) family physicians, 11 (37%) obstetrician gynecologists, 5 (17%) advanced practice clinicians and 2 (7%) adolescent pediatricians, representing 17 states and territories. The providers in our sample were overall supportive of IUD self-removal, and all referenced healthcare access or reproductive autonomy as the primary reason that they were supportive. Clinicians reported that self-removal was safe or probably safe, though varied in how they incorporated counseling about selfremoval. Most believed that having a self-removal option would benefit their patients, though disagreed about how easy or feasible self-removal is, with some believing that anyone can remove their own IUD without assistance, and others believing that most are unable to remove their own IUD. Providers suggested that messaging to patients, an effective informational guide, and longer string-length practices would make IUD self-removal more common and accessible. Conclusions While family planning clinicians were overall supportive of IUD self-removal, providers who endorse its benefits may not routinely counsel patients about this option and there are varying beliefs about how feasible IUD self-removal is for their patients.
