- W4387476416 abstract "Parks are important solutions to urban heat challenges given their potential for cool island effects. Observation and assessment of park cooling performance are important for providing urban planners, designers, and managers with fundamental information for accurate decisions relevant to park planning, design, construction, and maintenance. This paper presents a review of sensing-based park cooling performance studies, aiming to i) understand the research evolution of sensing-based park cooling studies, ii) reveal the emergence and advancement of sensing techniques, iii) analyze park cooling assessment methods and indicators, iv) document the spatiotemporal variations of park cooling performance, v) explore key factors affecting cooling performance, and vi) discuss the research gaps and practical shortcomings, and propose suggestions for addressing them. The results indicate that sensing techniques enhance researchers’ capacity to observe park cooling performance, as evidenced by the rapid increase in publications, research areas, source journals, and leading nations. Sensing-based park cooling studies were shaped as sensing-based techniques for understanding environmental sciences relevant to ecology and forestry, thereby improving the technology implementation capacity for better urban construction and management. The cooling performance can be assessed by the cooling distance, cooling intensity, cooling strength, cooling area, cooling efficiency, and cooling gradient. These indicators were further linked to cooling service accessibility, building energy efficiency, house prices, and social equality. However, the terminology and definitions of such indicators in many studies were mixed, and the assessment methods were not unified, reducing the comparability, robustness, and reliability of the results. However, existing studies have widely demonstrated spatial homogeneity, spatial heterogeneity, and temporal trends in park cooling performance, with some studies presenting contradictory results. Moreover, park cooling performance could be affected by many factors in geographic, climatic, urban development, weather, sampling, methodological, geometric, spatial, and vegetational aspects. To avoid ignoring some explainable variables, we suggest that it is important to describe influential factors, assessment methods, and assessment indicators for accurate, reliable, and comparable cooling performance. Overall, this study provides a reference for comprehensively understanding sensing-based park cooling performance observation and assessment, and it enlightens researchers to understand the methodological significance of park cooling performance assessments." @default.
