- W4387477574 abstract "This article examines how I. Goncharovs idea of civilization is transformed and completed in the essays The Fregat Pallada. The first part of the article is devoted to analyzing his impressions of England, the most developed state at that time. The second part deals with essays on the island of Madeira, the Cape Colony and Japan. Goncharov traveled around the world aboard the frigate Pallada, a kind of drifting island of the Russian world with such inherent features as cultural openness, Orthodox spirit and patriarchy. This voyage resulted in Goncharovs formulation of his own idea of civilization. The path of development of world civilization, according to Goncharov, is singular, unidirectional, divided into age stages (infancy, maturity, etc.) and includes states of sleep and wakefulness. According to the imperialist view, which Goncharov also adheres to, different peoples are at different stages of this path, and the task of more developed countries is to awaken sleeping civilizations by destroying the gap between states with different levels of progress. However, unlike Britain, which adheres to methods of violence and war, his experience in Japan and China demonstrates the possibility of erasing borders through dialog and the search for mutual understanding based on openness and the Orthodox spirit of the Russian world." @default.
