- W4387491985 abstract "Protein malnutrition during childhood is a primary global concern, contributing to more than 50 % of childhood mortality in developing countries owing to its complications on many organs, such as the liver. Supplementation with amino acids is hypothesized to ameliorate the hepatic complications, especially if they are loaded in a liver-targeted delivery system. Therefore, in the current study, loading of five amino acids; namely leucine, isoleucine, valine, glutamine and arginine was attempted in nanoliposomes decorated with glycyrrhetinic acid, and their effects were tested in protein-deficient diet (PDD) animal model. Results revealed that oral administration of the amino acids-loaded nanoliposomes as well as the conventional forms either separately or combined significantly ameliorated the hematopoietic and hepatic complications resulting from the chronic ingestion of PDD. However, the nanoliposomal formulations were superior in normalization of the mean liver weights, the liver transferrin and liver nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 levels. They also significantly reduced the levels of liver enzymes AST and ALT, while elevating the serum and hepatic total protein. In addition, the nanoliposomal formulations were superior in ameliorating oxidative stress, and managed to reduce the levels of 8-OHdG and the hepatic AMP/ATP ratio. They also provided the best histopathological features upon microscopic examination, displaying normal hepatic architecture. Therefore, it can be concluded that the nanoliposomal formulations of amino acids taken in combination could replenish the bioavailable protein for erythropoiesis, leucopoiesis as well as hepatoprotection, and they can be delineated as a promising treatment modality to counteract the protein malnutrition complications." @default.
