- W4387493604 abstract "In children with ASD, having a sibling is associated with better social communication skills, nonverbal communication skills, and adaptive behavior responses, possibly through the sibling’s role as a play companion, teacher, and conversation partner. While some sibling relationships are characterized by empathy and protectiveness, others can be impacted by stress related to familial isolation, feelings of embarrassment at school, and tense home environments. The research is inconsistent regarding the impact on the unaffected sibling, with some papers reporting higher levels of self-concept and social competence and others reporting higher rates of mental health disorders. A meta-analysis of 69 studies found that siblings of children with ASD had significantly higher rates of ADHD, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms than siblings of children without ASD (Shivers et al, 2019). The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the need for clinicians to employ family-centered interventions that prioritize the benefits of an enriching sibling relationship and the well-being of the unaffected sibling, to improve psychosocial outcomes for both siblings and address the unique concerns of the unaffected sibling." @default.
