- W4387515441 abstract "The presence of atomic-structural (topological) disorder, as in amorphous/glassy materials, has significant effects on the character and behavior of electron states, particularly in disordered semiconductors/insulators. All electron states in perfectly crystalline solids are spatially delocalized; such Bloch states, characterized by well-defined values of electron wavevectors, reflect the underlying crystal symmetries. However, structural disorder destroys the long-range atomic-translational symmetry of crystals, and hence the electron wavevector is no longer a unique characteristic of electron wavefunctions in amorphous/glassy materials. Moreover, the sharp features (van Hove singularities) appearing in the electronic density of states of crystalline materials are broadened out in amorphous/glassy solids, due to disorder. But the key difference in the characteristics of the electronic-structure behavior between crystals and amorphous/glassy materials is in the nature of the electronic wavefunction: in crystals, the (Bloch) electron wavefunctions are all spatially delocalized, whereas in amorphous/glassy semiconductors and insulators, the electronic wavefunctions are spatially localized, due to potential-energy disorder, at the edges of the valence and conduction bands, and also in the bandgap between valence and conduction bands where the localized electron states are associated with atomic-coordination defects." @default.
