- W4387557654 abstract "Achilles tendon rupture has become a common problem in modern society, and its incidence is increasing, especially as a sports-related injury. The mean age of the patients is low (35-40 years old), and frequently the Achilles tendon rupture occurs without any warning (e.g., signal, such as pain, discomfort, tenderness, swelling) before the rupture. The great majority of the ruptured Achilles tendons show clear degenerative changes before the rupture, although in extreme (sporting) efforts a healthy Achilles tendon also may rupture (high jump, triple jump, volleyball, basketball)., The reasons for the increasing incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures are not known, but a more sedentary lifestyle with accompanying deterioration in the tendon blood flow and degeneration of tendon tissue has been the most commonly offered explanation. In this respect, the most dangerous combination is a sudden initiation (or restoration) of strenuous, Achilles tendon-loading sporting activities in the middle age. In these people, the initiation or restarting of exercise should be gradual and slowly progressive." @default.
