- W4387595101 abstract "Since the first procedures in humans, the excimer laser applied to the cornea through the photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) technique has proved effective for the correction of refractive error. Advances through which the laser is applied from broad beam to flying spots, allowing subsequent less irregular post-treatment stromal surfaces, as well as more sophisticated methods of eye tracking, have made PRK for high myopia a safer and more predictable procedure. The risk of late-onset corneal haze, with greater prevalence in highly myopic eyes, reduced the use of PRK for higher myopia. However, a solid sequence of research by different groups facilitated an understanding of how to mitigate the onset of haze using mitomycin C. Improved pain control strategies have also been developed to manage the inherent epithelial defect that arises with surface ablation techniques. PRK has a favorable image quality and safety profile for high myopia compared to techniques associated with the excimer laser that involve flap-making or lenticular extraction. Currently, when well indicated, PRK for high myopia has resulted in high levels of efficacy, predictability, and safety, following the standards accepted by regulatory agencies." @default.
