- W4387602023 abstract "A large amount of excess sludge produced by wastewater treatment plants is difficult to treat and dispose. Vermicomposting is a low-carbon emission technology for treating sludge. However, carbon emissions resulting from vermicomposting remain poorly studied in the literature. This study compares greenhouse gas emissions from aerobic composting and vermicomposting. To calculate and evaluate the level of carbon emissions during the vermicomposting of sludge, two excess sludge treatment processes, aerobic composting and vermicomposting, were designed. The mass balance model was used for calculations, and accounting pathways mainly included sludge thickening dewatering, pretreatment, and composting or vermicomposting. The calculated results showed that total carbon emissions from aerobic composting were 2128.35 kg ton−1, with the aerobic composting unit accounting for 439.00 kg ton−1. Moreover, total carbon emissions from vermicomposting were 1103.31 kg ton−1, among which the vermicomposting unit accounted for 378.32 kg ton−1. Compared with aerobic composting, vermicomposting significantly reduced carbon emissions during the treatment of sludge." @default.
