- W4387620764 abstract "Introduction: In patients with cancers of the head and neck region radiotherapy is associated with the risk of damage healthy tissues and organs. Changes in thyroid structure and function after irradiation are not clearly defined. Aim: to evaluate ultrasound changes in thyroid volume, parenchymal vascularity index (VI) of the thyroid gland and flow doppler parameters in the right inferior thyroid artery (ITA) in radically irradiated patients with primary cancers of the head and neck region. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 20 patients who underwent three ultrasound examinations: before radiation therapy (I), during the first week after completion of treatment (II), and after 3-6 months (III). Results: The mean radiation dose absorbed by thyroid gland was 54,95 6,95 Gy. The mean thyroid volume was 17.14 (13.74-23.43) cm3 (I),15.92 (12.51-20.35) cm3 (II) and 15.01 (11-16-18.92) cm3 (III), respectively (p<0.001 - I vs II); (p<0.001, I vs III); (p<0.001, II vs III). The increase in PSV, PI and RI values in the ITA and in VI of thyroid gland after radiotherapy (II vs I) were observed. The partial decrease in all these flow doppler parameters during 3-6 months after completion of treatment (III vs II) were observed. Conclusions: We observed the decrease in thyroid volume after irradiation in patients with head and neck cancers, that continued during 3-6 months after completion of treatment. The flow doppler parameters in the ITA and VI of the thyroid gland increased during irradiation, then partially decreased during 3-6 months after treatment." @default.
