- W4387623009 abstract "Unregulated discharge of industrial wastewater-containing nitroaromatics into the environment has caused severe damage to the quality of aquatic ecosystems. This distressing situation has been established to impact aquatic organisms and human well-being directly. Indeed, the nitrophenolic compounds are genotoxic, carcinogenic, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Treatment of the industrial effluents represents a synoptic approach that could reduce the presence of noxious nitroaromatics in the environment. Considering that these refractory pollutants are not effectively removed in conventional wastewater treatment procedures, various heterogeneous catalytic systems, including metal/oxide nanocatalysts, have been identified for chemical transformation. However, these materials are anticipated to undergo aggregation in an aqueous medium, leading to reduced efficiency. To remediate this limitation, graphene oxide (GO)-containing solid matrixes have established themselves as supports with the potential capability in stabilizing the active sites for lasting catalytic performance. Conversion of nitro groups through catalytic hydrogenation of nitroaromatics leads to reduced toxicity of these pollutants. The reduction of organic compounds is a crucial step in synthesizing pharmaceutically important derivatives. This chapter presents detailed explanations of the catalytic hydrogenation processes mediated by metal/oxide nanostructures. The recently reported strategies for GO functionalization are systematically elaborated. The catalytic performance of selected graphene-based nanocatalysts is discussed, and the effect of key operating variables, including stability, recyclability, and plausible mechanisms, are also elaborated." @default.
