- W4387627874 abstract "The search for energy sources has driven investments in the use and production of renewable sources. Ethanol is an alternative energy source, reduces pollutant gas emissions, is renewable, and can be produced from different biomasses, like the lignocellulosic ethanol, from cellulose present in the lignocellulosic biomass. However, one main limitation involving this ethanol production is the cell wall deconstruction to free polysaccharides as a source of fermentable sugars in an efficient and economically feasible pretreatment process. Ionic liquid (IL) treatments stand out for their capacity to deconstruct the vegetal wall enhancing the cellulose accessibility and the fermentable sugar yield. Here, we present a brief review of the use of ILs in the pretreatment of some biomass types. Despite some technological barriers, the technological potential of this type of pretreatment stands out, due to the possibility of reusing ILs, their low chemical reactivity, and their great ability to dissolve cellulose." @default.
