- W4387668839 abstract "Clean water is vital to our health and a sustainable environment. However, the United Nation’s report suggests that about 26% of people currently lack access to safe drinking water. Among various factors that pose barriers to safe drinking water, water pollution from industrial processes is one of the prime causes. Release of industrial waste, which include hazardous chemicals and materials, to the water resources make water unsafe to drink and use for household purposes. Among various industries, textile industrial wastewater has received considerable attention in recent years because untreated/or improperly treated effluent could discharge various contaminants that include dyes, finishes, salts, polymers, and auxiliaries to water sources. Among these contaminants, dyes are the most visible pollutants in the textile wastewater that can reduce the aesthetics of water resources and pose serious threats to the environment and public health. Dyes in wastewater increase chemical and biochemical oxygen demands, halt plant growth and diversity, and severely damage the aquatic ecosystem. Furthermore, some dyes and their byproducts can cause toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity among other adverse health effects. Therefore, removal of dye contaminants from water resources is extremely important. Polymeric materials, because of their versatile physicochemical characteristics, have great potential to remove such contaminants effectively from industrial wastewater. This chapter focuses on the uses of polymeric materials to enable removal of colorants from wastewater to improve water quality for human health and a sustainable environment. The first section of this chapter provides a summary of the different types of dyes used in textiles, including their advantages, and disadvantages. Next, the overview on the effect of dyes on the environment and human health is reported. The last section of the chapter focuses on common wastewater treatment methods with emphasis on uses of polymeric materials in various treatment processes with specific examples." @default.
