- W4387681908 abstract "In the post-disaster period, recovery is an essential phase in the emergency management process; however, women are often socially disadvantaged and take longer to recover. Gender mainstreaming is a crucial strategy to achieve gender equality and resilience-building, especially in the post-disaster period. This research aims to discuss policy-relevant findings and practices related to approaches to mainstream gender following the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake in Indonesia. Blaikie's pressure and release model was adopted in this study to identify critical determinants of gender vulnerability (root causes, dynamic pressures, and unsafe conditions). This research used an exploratory case study to examine the implementation of a gender-responsive policy for reconstruction after the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake. Data were collected through interviews with key stakeholders and close-ended questionnaires with the female beneficiaries of the government's support during and after the earthquake. After the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake, gender subordination and gender-based violence among vulnerable groups were insignificant, while stereotyping, marginalization, and the double burden of the household and the workplace persisted. Attempts to address gender equality in disaster response policies were hindered by the root causes of gender vulnerability—a patriarchal culture entrenched in the political and economic systems." @default.
