- W44060595 abstract "Behavioural descriptions in most hardware description languages are procedural, and hence not adequate for abstract (black box) input/output specification, nor for describing realizations by non-computational processes (i.e. not covered by the theory of computation). For the latter two purposes, as well as for introducing sufficient freedom of expression for transformational reasoning and design, truly declarative languages are necessary. These issues are illustrated by various examples. Since most relevant aspects cannot be formulated in existing hardware description languages, we use a preliminary version of a declarative language that offers the required diversity in pragmatics (viz. purpose or usage) and semantics (viz. meaning). In particular, the declarative semantics can express abstract specifications, the program semantics can express programmed realizations, and the system semantics can express circuit realizations and their properties. The conclusion of this exploration in declarativity is that allowing sufficient expressive and manipulative power means abandoning the idea that specifications should always be executable, and replacing the narrow concept of execution (elaboration or evaluation) by the broader concept of symbolic manipulation." @default.
