- W44133765 abstract "The theoretical development of bioethics has been towards the establishment of a globally applicable theory both practically useful and universally justifiable for decisions, actions and policies regarding bioethical matters. However, more and more diversity and disagreement have appeared among theoreticians of bioethics as well as practitioners. As part of the outgrowth of the enlightenment project, bioethics seems unlikely to escape the fate of the failure of the project itself. There have been numerous efforts and labors in theoretical constructions, critical responses and counter-responses to combat this disturbing failure. Some contrive to build bioethics upon commonly accepted and acceptable middle principles, such as the so-called principlism by Tom Beauchamp and James Childress.1 Some have noted the reality of diversity and difference, especially cross-culturally, and have turned realistically to face these divisive differences and the problems they pose. Tristram Engelhardt,2 by making the distinction between moral friends and moral strangers, has in fact made a bold theoretical endeavor to take moral differences seriously and has elaborated a procedural foundation for bioethics on the basis of a default requirement — a principle of permission (1996). However, radical critics may still regard such a meager bioethics to be, nevertheless, a culturally biased notion rooted in autonomy or rationality." @default.
