- W44173814 abstract "Nanodispersions are dispersed systems that contain nanoparticles. This chapter discusses the the solid, rigid nanoparticulates. The chapter presents some examples of characterization of nanodispersions performed in a laboratory. The first one is on reference material for nanoparticulates. There is one specific nanodispersion that has been used as a reference material for a long time. It is silica Ludox. The chapter presents characteristics of this dispersion, measured in collaboration with Horiba, USA, and discusses its differences with the other potential reference/certified material—gold sols. Silica Ludox is currently under consideration by the European Union Institute of Standards as certified material for the particle sizing of nanodispersions. Then, the chapter presents studies of polydisperse systems containing nanoparticle fraction. Ultrasound characterizes these systems without any special sample treatment. This allows monitoring the fraction of nanoparticles in such systems with broad size distributions. Alternatively, there is the possibility of measuring the content of large particles when nanoparticles dominate the size distribution. There are two possible ways to achieve this: one using an acoustic probe and the other with the electroacoustic probe. The sensitivity of ultrasound-based methods for these two extreme tasks is determined in the chapter, which presents important industrial applications in cosmetics, chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) slurries, nanotoxicology, and so on.
