- W44297091 abstract "Dn the fall of 2006,1 began to teach in a local community education program that, with a good deal of help, I had also organized. The idea was simple. Faculty from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I then taught, would offer night classes in their areas of expertise (literature, phi losophy, art history, U.S. history, and critical thinking and writing) for anyone in the community who was eighteen or older and lived at 150 percent of the poverty level or lower. (Although you wouldn't know it if you stuck to campus and its surrounding areas, Champaign-Urbana had an astonishing number of people living in poverty.) Classes met in a shabby multipurpose room of a branch library in one of Champaign Urbana's few dodgy neighborhoods. Students who completed the nine-month course would receive six hours of college credit, which they could then transfer to other institutions of higher learning, including a nearby community college. Everything would be free: tuition, books, even child care at an adjacent community center. We called it, after a similar course in Chicago that provided some funding and shared publicity, The Odyssey Project. The previous spring, as I recruited faculty for The Odyssey Project, I also proposed to teach a conventional undergraduate course on the literature of poverty. The course would survey U.S. literature about poverty from (roughly) the 1850s to the present, starting with Henry David Thoreau and ending with Barbara Ehren reich. Although I told no one, I very much hoped that the literature class I offered on campus would complement the community education class I offered off campus. By night, I would teach poor adult students about writing, and, if everything broke" @default.
