- W44431528 abstract "Around half of the world's freshwater and estuarine wetlands have disappeared, almost exclusively due to development activities and population growth. Valuing the goods and services provided by wetlands is critical to policy choices concerning the management of remaining wetlands. Although progress has been made through economists and natural scientists collaborating to determine the value of some nonmarket wetland goods and services, many other important benefits are still inadequately assessed. In addition, as wetland degradation and conversion have led to the loss of many important goods and services, in recent decades there have been increasing efforts to restore and create wetlands. Assessing nonmarket value of wetland goods and services is also vital to these efforts. To facilitate the transition to restoring and creating wetland as opposed to destroying them, nonmarket valuation should also focus on assessing alternative wetland landscape use scenarios and their impacts on conservation versus development trade-offs as well as wetland restoration and creation priorities." @default.
