The process of synchronizing the local code and the received code is commonly achieved in two stages: initially, the two code signals are aligned in phase to uncertainty less than one chip duration through a process called “code acquisition” or “coarse synchronization.” Once the incoming code is acquired, a verification process attests the correct code phase, which is continuously maintained by a closed loop tracking system. The acquisition process is random and the randomness is due to many sources such as initial uncertainty about the code phase offset. In addition, the receiver local carrier must be synchronized to the received carrier for coherent demodulation. However, the frequency–time synchronization necessitates the search over a two-dimension (2D) uncertainty region containing the frequency and code phase. A practical acquisition system achieves suboptimal performance through a compromise between acquisition time and complexity. The time synchronization of a spread-spectrum system operating in “mobile multipath fading” channels has also been discussed in the chapter." @default.
