- W44804472 abstract "The hemoglobin-containing erythrocyte is a free-floating, non-adherent cell. However, when erythrocytes are infected with the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum , these cells adhere to the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels and block capillaries and venules. Adhesion of the P. falciparum -infected red cell is a developmentally regulated process. Only red cells bearing mature pigmented forms of the parasite, called trophozoites and schizonts, attach to the capillary and postcapillary venules. The surface of endothelial cells or other target cells contains adhesion molecules that play a critical role in sequestration and cytoadherence. Four families of adhesion molecules have been identified as ligands for P. falciparum -infected red cells: (1) the immunoglobulin gene superfamily, (2) the selectin family, (3) the thrombospondins, and (4) the CD361LIMP II family. Although there are several well-characterized candidates for the ligand(s) on the target cell, the identification and characterization of the adhesin(s) on the P. falciparum -infected red cell have not advanced to that stage. There are two broad categories of adhesins on the P. falciparum -infected red cell: parasite-encoded proteins and host-related proteins." @default.
