- W44917741 abstract "This paper examines how stimulus duration affects level discrimination (also called intensity discrimination) in a burst-comparison paradigm. First, the sensitivity, d', for a fixed level increment is measured as a function of burst duration. Results for three normal listeners are consistent with previous measurements of difference limens, ΔLDLs (−201og[(p+ΔpDL)/p], where p is sound pressure). They show that d' increases as a power function of duration up to a maximum duration of about 1 s. The exponent (i.e., the rate of increase) is about 0.3. This exponent is much less than that of 0.5 predicted by a signal-detection model using multiple observations of a stationary stochastic process. However, it can be predicted from auditory-nerve data, if adaptation is taken into account. In an attempt to reduce the effect of adaptation, ΔLDLs for trains of four and 16 10-ms tone bursts were measured as a function of interburst interval. Results for four normal listeners show that the ΔLDLs improve only slightly faster with increasing burst count than with increasing duration of a single burst. Although adaptation may play a role in explaining the effect of duration on level discrimination, effects of memory decay probably negated the advantage that should result from reducing adaptation." @default.
