- W45189780 abstract "Publisher Summary The sensory receptors transform external energies into changes in the membrane potential. All sensory receptors have some mechanisms in common, such as detection, amplification, discrimination, and adaptation. This chapter discusses that the mechanisms lead to changes in the membrane potential of the sensory receptors that involve either direct coupling of the stimulus and ionic channels or activation of second messenger systems. The majority of receptors use the second-messenger system as a means of both detection and amplification of the signal. The second-messengers that are involved in transduction and amplification are cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP); also, calcium is involved as a second or third messenger in sensory receptors. All sensory receptors produce generator potential and show summation. All mechanoreceptors have a type of channel that is mechanically activated. The conductance of this channel is as small as 1 ns or as large as 40 ps. These channels do not require a second-messenger system. The adaptation in the mechanoreceptor occurs through specialized structures, such as laminae, that cover pacinian corpuscles or through specialized ionic channels." @default.
