- W45484893 abstract "Philippe Djian was unknown, if not ignored, until the success in 1986 of Betty Blue, the movie adaptation of one of his novels. In spite of the fact that he is now one of the best known of a new generation of French writers, full recognition is still lagging, if not lacking, to this day. (1) The surprisingly limited critical reception leaves much unsaid about an author whose every novel unconditionally sells an average of a million copies in France alone and whose popular following in Germany and in the United Kingdom is equally fervent. Djian represents a new type of literature which has been strongly attacked by the French newspapers' and magazines' literary critics and ignored by the French academic establishment. Yet, in 1993, thanks to his entrance into the ranks of famed publishing company Gallimard, Djian earned a generous measure of official recognition. Whereas his acceptance by Gallimard does signify some acknowledgment by the establishment, the fact remains that the success of the film version of his novel, 37[degrees]2 le matin, known outside of France under the English title, Betty Blue, has greatly served the cause of both Djian and his type of literature. Why? The answer rests upon several factors, among which one can immediately identify the cinematographic talent of the adaptation's director Jean-Jacques Beineix, and also, perhaps foremost, the need for greater cohesiveness required by the translation of the written text into visual, cinematographic images. In essence, the visualization domesticates the greater freedom of th e written word. Being a writer of the immediate and eminently visual, Djian was a prime candidate for screen adaptation, as was his novel, 37[degrees]2 le matin, (2) literally: 99 degrees in the morning, a reference to both hot weather and slightly elevated body temperature. It is by means of the film adaptation of Djian's work and the features of actress Beatrice Dalle that the general public discovered the young writer. However, the question remains: Has Beineix been traduttore or traditore, a translator or a traitor? Indeed Betty conquered the movie theaters and the public, carrying Djian in her wake, bringing him name recognition, and launching his career; yet, the original novel underwent substantial revisions, such as the reduction in the prominent role of the writer protagonist (who, in the novel, is nameless) to Betty's advantage; the focus of the plot on the young woman's deepening madness; the unavoidable visualization of violence; the more gratuitous visualization of sexuality; the manipulation of time; and finally, the loss of Djian's characteristically wide open, unidentified spaces, in favor of the film's specific and limited locales (Paris, for instance). When comparing and analyzing ties between literature and film, one needs to emphasize from the beginning how two-sided 37[degrees]2 le matin is. For example, Djian presents to us an anonymous protagonist (in the novel); furthermore, this main character, a would-be writer himself, questions and ponders the very essence of the act of writing, as should any respectable and true French writer, even though 37[degrees]2 positions itself deliberately in the realm of anti- or para-literature. Two examples from a host of possibilities: first, the prevalence of living with Betty for the narrator--Je decouvrais plus de choses en vivant avec elle qu'en m'asseyant devant une feuille avec la cervelle en ebullition (170). This in effect signifies the rejection of intellectual adventure in favor of life on an existential basis, one day at a time. As a second example of this resolutely anti-establishment attitude, the following exchange between the narrator and his friend Bob, who just read his manuscript: --J'aime vraiment ta maniere d'ecrire, il avait conclu, mais pourquot y a pas d'histoire...? --Non mais dis-moi sincerement, Bobby, des histories t'en lis pas assez tous les matins on ouvrant ton journal. …" @default.
