- W45488182 abstract "Androgens are essential for the development and function of the male reproductive tract. This chapter discusses three types of androgen-binding proteins that have been identified in androgen-dependent organs of the male rat until present. Each of the three proteins exhibits a degree of specificity for biologically active androgens. The tubular fluid of testis and epididymis of the male rat contains an androgen-binding protein referred to as ABP. ABP is thought to have a carrier function perhaps influencing the accumulation and distribution of androgens in the testis germinal epithelium and the transport of androgens from testis to epididymis. In addition to its apparent role in androgen action, the identification of ABP as a secretory product of the Sertoli cell has provided an effective new way to study the hormonal control of Sertoli cell function. This chapter reviews earlier studies on the physical and chemical properties of ABP and some more recent results on the hormonal control of ABP production." @default.
