- W45703787 abstract "The 1978 Delhi Flood was essentially a 'deluge'—in the widest sense of the term. Experts from the Water Commission recorded 5,00,000 cusecs of water as having flowed past Delhi, and North Delhi, an area of some 150 square miles, was inundated. This gives one some idea of the magnitude of the calamity: the floods were of a kind that occur only once in a cycle of 500-800 years! Damage caused by the flood has been estimated at about Rs. 15 crores. Crops and houses damaged account for about Rs. 12 crores—six crores each—while the damage caused to embankments, roads, public buildings, etc., was put at Rs 3 crores. Crops over an area of 50,000 acres of agri cultural land in 130 villages were completely destroyed, while about twenty to twenty-five thousand houses were badly affected by the flood. According to one assessment, Nathupura village in North Delhi was the most seriously affected: out of a total of 300 houses, 257 were totally destroyed and the rest damaged. When the first Indian Air Force planes flew out to the village of Burari (in the same area), on the morning of 8 September, the relieved villagers, many of them perched on trees, held up a huge cardboard banner with the words 'Dhanyawad, hum do din se bhukhe hain' (Thank you, we have been hungry for two days) written in chalk upon it. One need hardly stress that, apart from crops and build ings, helpless humans and cattle also perish, and the loss here is often incalculable." @default.
