- W45825902 abstract "Androgen excess disorders are common in women and may represent the most common endocrinological reason for a physician visit. They are a heterogeneous group of disorders that can produce a common phenotype, and the current differential diagnosis most commonly arrives at polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as the diagnosis of choice. Circulating levels of androgens rarely track into the male range usually only in cases of virilizing forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and androgen-secreting tumors (including many forms of Cushing’s syndrome) (see Fig. 1). For the more common forms of androgen excess, there is a fine line between normal and elevated androgen levels, with marked peripheral phenotypic signs of androgen excess in a women at circulating testosterone levels of 100–150 ng/dL. This is still only half the lower limit of normal for males, for whom the normal range is approx 300–1000 ng/dL." @default.
