- W45944964 abstract "Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived, unstable gas which is synthesized by a number of isoforms of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS), all of which are related to the cytochrome P450 family but which have diverged from a speculated common precursor in the distant past (MONCADA et al. 1991). Three NOS isoforms which are differentially localized and regulated have been described so far. Two isoforms appear to depend on calcium for their activation: the endothelial isoform (eNOS), a vital component in the regulation of blood pressure (PALMER et al. 1987), and the neuronal isoform (nNOS), which is mainly neural in location and is functionally related to the endothelial form in terms of its calcium dependence. However, there are now numerous situations where nNOS can be induced, although not usually by inflammatory cytokines. Neuronal NO acts in large part by activating the haemoproteins cytoplasmic guanylate cyclase and cyclo-oxygenase, thus utilizing cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP) and prostanoids, respectively, as second messengers." @default.
