- W45988742 abstract "This article explores the triple interaction between dominant white subordinate black Americans and doubly subordinated black immigrants and relies on data from a 1978 to 1980 case study of Haitian immigrants in a small midwestern city. Haiti is one of the most densely populated countries in the world; dreaming of a better life in the US most Haitians leave to escape poverty unemployment and political repression. The usual pattern is for a white American family to send for Haitain domestic workers often having met someone while vacationing in Haiti and then the Haitians send for their relatives to join them when they move to the US. After coming to the US most Haitian men and women have service jobs such as maintenance dish washing and cleaning or unskilled jobs in factor assembly lines. They often lack knowledge of the English language and lack skills in dealing with the complexity of US life. Even after residing in the US for many years many Haitians face difficulties in dealing with American institutions; they have problems with leases car payments house mortgages immigration rules and the legal system. When Haitians face unequal treatment because of their skin color they protest the mistreatment immediately; at the same time they believe the white majority treats them better once they find out that they are not native black Americans. They emphasize their distinct identity because they strive to minimize the effects of racial ascription on the economic opportunities open to them in the US. Black working and lower classes feel that Haitian immigrants compete and often succeed more than they in gaining jobs and owning property; middle class blacks despise Haitians because they are doing the low prestige service jobs which blacks traditionally did in US history." @default.
