Since ventilation with outdoor air is essential to replace the oxygen consumed and to dilute the indoor air contaminants to acceptable levels, indoor air quality (IAQ) is directly related to outdoor air quality. In conventional HVAC designs, the arbitrary increase of outdoor air has been a standard practice for many years. However, total reliance on dilution air is neither cost effective nor energy efficient, and indiscriminate use of outdoor air may result in undesired contaminants in higher concentrations brought into an occupied space. To establish the amount of outdoor air needed, the authors have constructed an interactive algorithm capable of estimating time-varying CO[sub 2] concentrations to ensure that ventilation rates selected are capable of satisfying minimum ventilation requirements (a worst-case scenario'') by investigating each zone on a real-time basis. In this article, the authors will present the results of the application of this dynamic modeling methodology to a 10-story office building assumed to be located in five representative US cities.
