- W46707029 abstract "This chapter presents diffusion in nonelectrolyte and electrolyte systems as the linear phenomenological laws. It presents the three main ways to describe multicomponent diffusion such as: the Maxwell–Stefan diffusion where fluxes and forces are mixed; Chapman–Cowling and Hirschfelder–Curtis–Bird approach where the diffusion of all the components are treated in a similar way; and description with a reference to a particular component, for example solvent or mass average (barycentric) definition. The chapter describes the concepts of mobility, electrochemical potential, electrochemical affinity, electrical conductance, and Hittorf transference number. One of the problems with diffusion in liquids is that even the binary diffusion coefficients are often composition dependent, and it is difficult to obtain the numerical values of coefficients relating fluxes to concentration gradients. In gas mixtures, only the binary diffusivities are assumed independent of composition. The chapter presents some advantages of the Maxwell-Stefan description of diffusion. The mass and molar diffusion are important in practice, and can be derived from the Maxwell-Stefan description of diffusion. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the irreversible processes in electrolyte systems." @default.
