- W4673910 abstract "Matching of enteric secretion and reabsorption of sodium, with both vastly exceeding daily dietary intake, provides an interesting analogy with the problem of glomerulo-tubular balance. This chapter discusses this analogy. The analogy goes further because, like the proximal tubule, the proximal segments of the intestine are characterized by their ability to transport large amounts of sodium and water, rather than their ability to produce steep gradients of concentration. The gut is not conventionally acknowledged to have an important role in the regulation of mammalian sodium balance, being over-shadowed by the kidney. In a substantial proportion of individuals from a variety of species, however, the gut, rather than the kidney, is the main route of sodium excretion unless sodium intake is exorbitant. Where the most direct comparisons can be made, individuals excreting most of their sodium in feces, compared with those excreting it mainly in urine, are arguably better adapted. Thus, they show the lower obligatory sodium loss in pregnancy, a greater salt appetite when sodium solutions are available, a lower water turnover both normally and during dehydration, better maintenance of potassium excretion and less tendency toward hyperkalemia during dehydration. They respond equally effectively to sodium deprivation." @default.
