The upper respiratory infections (URI) account for 38% of complaints involving the respiratory tract. More than 50% of episodes of URI are treated with antibiotics. This article aims to i dentify the prevalence of respiratory diseases in adults in a primary health care centre and the procedure adopted by the medical professionals regarding the diagnosis of the respiratory disease. Data collection was performed by checking medical records , identifying variables as sex, age and the month of the year . Signs , symptoms and diagnoses of respiratory diseases were also identified. As a result it was found that the prevalence of respiratory diseases was 9.54% . The most common diagnosis was upper respiratory tract infection , present in 33.33 % of consultations for respiratory diseases . The female was present in 66.67 % of respiratory complaints . The age group between 25 to 44 years had a prevalence of 42.85% . The month of May showed a prevalence of 19.04 %. The most widely adopted by professionals was the prescription of antibiotics in 42.85% of consultations for respiratory disease . The most prescribed antibiotic was amoxicillin in 66.67 % of cases. It is concluded that respiratory diseases had a high prevalence among adults in the general attendance at the Basic Health Unit . Among respiratory diseases , respiratory infection high represented a high prevalence rate . Females accounted for the majority of consultations for respiratory diseases . The age group 25 to 44 years had a high prevalence of respiratory diseases , which mainly occurred in winter . Prescribing antibiotics for respiratory diseases in the Basic Health Unit was high and consistent with the literature in general.
